Once thought of as an alternative “hippie” practice, meditation has grown in stature and popularity to become mainstream and an accepted part of a wellness regime for the modern age. Meditation is simple and powerful. Meditation is an effective stress-relief technique for people from all walks of life. In fact, meditation is so powerful it can actually lower your blood pressure and may even improve your immune system.

Meditation may be associated with a religion but can also be a secular practice. There are many techniques associated with meditation but at the heart of meditation is one common idea – that narrowing the focus quiets the mind and helps the body be still.

Recent studies show that meditation improves your physical response to stress and also strengthens your emotional response to stress. Stress is a major player in most diseases and health conditions – when you suffer from stress you are more likely to suffer from disease as well as suffer the symptoms of disease more strongly. Regularly meditating lessens the impact of stress so it is a powerful technique for improving health.

How Do You Start a Meditation Practice?

There are dozens of meditation practices available to you if you want to lower your stress and reclaim your health. Meditation is not necessarily associated with a religion although there are religious practices that also include meditation. Try different techniques until you find something that suits you. At the core of most meditation practices are some key factors:

  • A quiet space – meditation is easier for beginners when it takes place in a quiet area free from distractions.
  • A comfortable posture – you may meditate while sitting or lying down, or even walking.
  • Focused attention – when you meditate you usually focus your attention on something such as a mantra (a word or a set of words), an object like a candle or a picture, or the flow of the breath.
  • Open attitude – when meditating it is important to let thoughts and feelings come and go without focusing on them or judging them. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your focus – the breath, or your mantra.

Start a meditation practice by meditating for a few minutes each day, gradually building the time until you are spending 20 or 30 minutes each day on the practice for the greatest health benefits.
