When you’re considering how to lead a healthier life, don’t forget abut one of the most important components of wellbeing – water. Water is essential for all your bodily functions and it helps you to live a healthy and happy life. Proper hydration prevents tiredness, improves your focus, gives you better skin, helps your digestive system, assists you when you are trying to build muscle, and can even help you to lose weight.
You need to drink between 6 and 8 glasses of water a day, and many experts suggest drinking at least 12. If this sounds like a lot of water, take a look at the following tips for better hydration.
Tips for Staying Hydrated:
- Buy a refillable water bottle and keep it with you at all times – while you work, when you go to the gym, when you relax at home, and in the car. Obviously, keep it filled up. Having water conveniently to hand makes it more likely you will drink enough water through the day.
- Drink one glass of water when you wake up and before you drink or eat anything else. You can get mildly dehydrated after seven or eight hours sleep, particularly in a warm room.
- Every time you go to the restroom, drink a glass of water.
- Drink water before you go to the gym, during your workout, and after exercising.
- If you have the tendency to forget to drink your glasses of water, set a reminder on your phone or your computer.
- Make sure you drink more water if you need to – for example, during hot weather, when you are active outdoors, when exercising, or if you are taking medications that cause you to lose water.
- You will need more water when you are consuming coffee or tea, and alcohol.
- If you feel hungry, make sure you are not actually suffering from thirst. Drink a glass of water and wait a while to see if you still feel like eating something. Water can be a great diet aid as it is calorie-free but it fills you up and can prevent snacking or overeating.
- You can supplement your water by eating fruits and vegetables, which also help provide fluids as well as nutrients.
- If you don’t like the taste of water, try adding slices of lemon or lime, or put cucumber in the jug.
