Can Chiropractic Care Help Seizures?

Can Chiropractic Care Help Seizures?

Most people think of chiropractic as health care that focuses on the musculoskeletal system only. If your back, neck, or joints are hurting, you can see a chiropractor. If you are having seizures, you should go to some type of specialist. While this is how a lot of people tend to think, the benefits of chiropractic are far-reaching, and can improve the lives and wellbeing of patients struggling with a number of conditions and disorders, not just pain or herniated discs.

This is because chiropractic takes a comprehensive focus on the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, and the effects disorders of these systems can have on a person’s overall health. It comes as no surprise then that chiropractic care has been credited with helping a number of people effectively manage and greatly reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures, and in some cases, eliminate them entirely. This has been particularly noted among children and among patients who did not respond to seizure medications.

Seizures and conditions such as epilepsy are the result of neurological disorders characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. When a seizure occurs, there is a sudden and spontaneous firing of neurons, and often, the underlying cause is not known. People who experience seizures can have different forms of seizures with varying degrees of severity, ranging from small episodes to serious fits involving a loss of consciousness, rigidity, and shaking caused by convulsions of the muscles. These episodes can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, and for many, they are a lifelong challenge that can reduce their quality of life and ability to meet daily needs.

Because seizures and epilepsy involve the human brain, there remains a lot we simply don’t know when it comes to identifying a definitive cause and treating the condition effectively. However, new studies have found that chiropractic adjustments can have a beneficial influence on the brain. Additionally, emerging research has also found that while medications and, in more severe cases, surgery have been shown to help some patients, new methods of implanting medical devices that stimulate the vagus nerve are also showing promise.

The vagus nerve exits the spine just below the skull, and chiropractors have long been aware that adjustments of the upper cervical spine, or neck, can greatly impact how the vagus nerve functions. New studies are finding that chiropractic adjustments may have similar benefits for patients with seizures and epilepsy as implanted devices that stimulate the vagus nerve.

One particular study conducted in 2001 and published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics opened the door to treating seizures with chiropractic:

  • The study took a close look at 17 children who saw no results when their epilepsy and seizures were treated with anticonvulsive medication.
  • All children received chiropractic care of the neck, which helped correct misalignment in the vertebrae. Misalignment of the spine, or subluxation, can interfere with nerve and brain function.
  • Nearly 90% of the children, 15 out of 17, saw a substantial reduction in both the intensity and frequency of seizures.

Researchers and medical experts are continually looking into exactly what allows chiropractic care to help epileptic patients, but for many patients who have obtain substantial relief or eliminated seizures, chiropractic has been the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical approach they needed when medications didn’t work. In addition to stimulating the vagus nerve, chiropractic adjustments also help improve function and regulation of the nerve, allowing the body to learn how to stimulate and control the vagus nerve on its own.

At Cobb Pain & Rehab, we take an individualized approach to assessing and treating patients. Our goals are to understand the reason why a patient needs relief and to implement a tailored treatment approach that addresses their unique needs and improves their overall health. This includes treatment of patients who experience seizures.

If you or someone you love suffers from epilepsy or seizures, our Cobb chiropractor and support staff are happy to discuss how chiropractic care may be of benefit in your situation, especially if other approaches, such as anticonvulsive medications, have not helped. Pediatric chiropractic care has also been shown to help many children control or even eliminate seizures. Our team can personally discuss any questions or concerns you may have during a free consultation.
