Office Jobs & Headaches: How Sitting All Day Can Hurt You

Did you know sitting for prolonged periods of time might cause headaches and migraines? Most of us have heard about the studies ticking off all of the negative side-effects of sitting at a desk all day, but some people might not know headaches are on the list. Roughly 86% of all American workers sit all day, despite studies that have shown prolonged sitting to cause back and neck tension, a slower metabolism, and an altered distribution of body fat, just to name a few. If you work a desk job, make sure you are doing what you can to avoid chronic migraines and headaches in the workplace.

When you sit for prolonged periods of time, it often creates tension in the back and neck, especially if you exhibit bad posture. Because the neck muscles directly connect to the head, any tension in the neck can cause pressure to build up in the head, causing headaches. Not only could this lead to tension headaches, but this type of discomfort and stress could also trigger a migraine, which can be debilitating and could drastically affect your productivity at work.

In order to prevent headaches at work, there are a few things you can do.

  • Set an alarm: Get up and move around at least once every hour so your body doesn’t stay still for prolonged periods of time. Take a quick walk around the building, walk to your coworker’s office to discuss an issue rather than sending over a message in an email, or find some other way to increase your walk time throughout the day.
  • Switch to a standing desk: There are a number of companies that make desks at standing height to help office workers avoid sitting all day. Many of these desks alternate between sitting and standing, and can help improve worker mobility while still providing the option to sit when necessary.
  • Make sure your chair is supportive: If you must sit all day, make sure your chair has proper lumbar support. Also, consider propping up your feet to allow for better posture and circulation.
  • Improve posture: Posture can play a huge role in at-work discomfort. If you sit for long periods of the day, make sure you are practicing good posture to avoid unnecessary back and neck pain.

If you are suffering headaches at work from prolonged periods of sitting, make sure you are doing what you can to rectify the situation. In addition to trying out the above-mentioned remedies, you might also consider seeing our trained professionals at Atlanta Pain & Rehab.
